Teacher in Pandemic

When foraminifera marine algae or other organisms living on the bottom or in the waters above die their remains sink to the bottom and accumulate as ooze. Last week i posted a showcase of stunning chalk lettering designs which gave me the inspiration to create some chalk typography myself unfortunately i neither have the talent or a chalkboard to produce authentic hand made chalk typography murals but i ve come up with a technique that designers can use to achieve realistic chalk lettering effects with their artwork.

How Chalk Is Made Material Making Used Processing Procedure Product Industry

The basic mixing recipe is 2 parts water and 2 parts plaster of paris.

How do they make chalk. Next mix equal parts cornstarch and water in a bowl and add food coloring if you want to make colored chalk. Use enough tape so that there are no holes. The purest varieties contain up to 99 percent calcium carbonate in the form of the mineral calcite the sponge spicules diatom and radiolarian tests shells detrital grains of quartz and chert.

To make them thinner just cut a seam overlap the edges and tape together. Chalk is a soft white porous sedimentary carbonate rock a form of limestone composed of the mineral calcite. Mix roll into a stick like shape wrap in a towel and allow to dry for three days.

Next the limestone must be crushed. Basic eggshell chalk is six powdered eggshells combined with 1 teaspoon of very hot water and 1 teaspoon of flour. To make your own stick molds try using toilet paper rolls.

They even make tube shaped ones if you want traditional chalk shapes. I used some fun molds that came with a plaster of paris kit and some of the neat ice tube trays from ikea. To make homemade chalk using cornstarch line a toilet paper roll with a piece of wax paper making sure the waxed side is exposed.

To make chalk limestone is first quarried generally by an open pit quarry method. Gently spread the wax. Cover the bottom of the tube with masking tape so the chalk can t leak out.

Roll the wax paper into a tube and slip it inside each toilet paper roll. Primary crushing such as in a jaw crusher breaks down large boulders. Step 1 gather three to six toilet paper rolls.

It forms under reasonably deep marine conditions from the gradual accumulation of minute calcite shells coccoliths shed from micro organisms called coccolithophores. Chalk forms from a fine grained marine sediment known as ooze. Cut the wax paper into 6 inch by 6 inch 15 25 centimeters by 15 25 centimeters squares.

Secondary crushing pulverizes smaller chunks into pebbles. You can also use paper towel tubes but you will need to cut them in half step 2 cover one end of each tube with duct tape. As long as the 2 2 recipe is used virtually any amount of chalk can be made.

Calcite is an ionic salt called calcium carbonate or caco 3. Chalk soft fine grained easily pulverized white to grayish variety of limestone chalk is composed of the shells of such minute marine organisms as foraminifera coccoliths and rhabdoliths. If there are any holes the chalk mixture will leak step 3 line the tubes with wax paper.
